Arrival in Ostrava, Czech Republic

The Czech Republic, also known as Czechia, is a landlocked country in Central Europe. It is bordered by Austria to the south, Germany to the west, Poland to the northeast, and Slovakia to the southeast. Before 1989 the Czech Republic was called Czechoslovakia. This country was occupied by Nazy Germany during the World War 2. After that the country was divided and they were reunited in 1968. In 1989 the velvet revolution changes this country to a liberal democracy. on 31 December 1992, the country peacefully split into the independent countries of the Czech Republic and Slovakia. From 1991, the Czech Republic, originally as part of Czechoslovakia and since 1993 in its own right, has been a member of the Visegrád Group and from 1995, the OECD. The Czech Republic joined NATO on 12 March 1999 and the European Union on 1 May 2004. On 21 December 2007 the Czech Republic joined the Schengen Area.

Austria + Slovakia During the ERASMUS we plan to go to Austria or Slovakia to see the contrast between our culture and the way they live there. These two countries are near to Ostrava we just have to take the train for 2 or 3 hours.

As far as discoveries are concerned, we want to do some everywhere in and around the Czech Republic ! Germany is not close by but we are determined to go and see the great places of the Second World War in Germany and Poland like Auschwitz for example. We will take the opportunity to visit Warsaw and to party in Krakow (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and famous for its nightlife). Beyond perfecting our English, we really want to discover places far from the paradisiacal islands but geographically closer to current armed conflicts.
